At Dizzy Bluebell Designs, I believe that every day presents a unique opportunity to uncover and engage in, the brilliance that surrounds us. This philosophy stems from the notion that creative expression is a powerful means to illuminate our lives, even in the darkest times, transforming ordinary moments and the incredible world around us into sources of inspiration.
This page is to give a little glimpse into my method and hopefully provide some inspiration.
Embrace Creativity, Embrace Life, Embrace Grief
The beauty of embroidery, as it has been for hundreds of years, presents intricate designs and vibrant patterns woven into fabric. It tells stories and evokes emotions, often to make a remarkable statement. Showcasing the importance of innovation and expression in this craft- which is why I love it so much.
By embracing creativity, artisans can break traditional boundaries, experiment with textures and colours and materials. Ultimately contributing to the evolution of textile arts in a contemporary context. Most importantly making statement pieces to last a lifetime.
I am completely self taught in all elements of my work. I have found the journey incredibly nurturing and definately challenging at times. From sketching and design of my artwork, to the intricacies of sewing with Harris Tweed, recreating and painting with silk threads, it has been a joy.
Art has always been a deep love for me, a place of calm, mindfulness and awe. Art is alwys kind to me. This has definitely been one of the catalysts for my work, allowing me to bring to life my own designs, adding a layer of expression in my own special way.
Learning new skills takes us on an enriching journey that not only enhances our capabilities, but also fosters personal growth-no matter the area we explore.
In the realm of textile and embroidery art, creativity plays a pivotal role, allowing artists to express their unique visions and illustrations to transform them into extraordinary works. Whether the simplest of materials or threads of silk, all have a story to tell. Every story has to begin somewhere. How you tell it, the palette you use, is your choice. Ultimately your designs become your language.
Where my love for textile art really began. The Heron.
Almost every day I walk along the wonderful River Tweed. Almost every day I see the exquisite Heron. It has always captured my gaze and imagination and so I began sketching - not sure where it would end, I just needed it to be part of something more, another story.
I always love this stage - I choose the Harris Tweed colour & weave, map out the design and size, depending on the item which it will adorn and then I start to choose the palette. From a huge collection of threads, ribbons, beads and textiles, I'll start to select the colours and pieces i think belong together or have some significance to the design. All have been carefully chosen for my textile art stock.
This piece of art fashion is totally unique, made to measure, contemporary and utterly breath-taking, this piece speaks for itself.
I would never have imagined, when looking upon the Heron, that this would be the end result. Especially as i had never embroidered before this, but here it is. It gives the Heron and the Tweed cloth equal importance & status, together they make a beautiful piece.
The mighty Heron, Rosebay Willow Herb, Meadow Crane's-Bill (or Meadow Geranium) the River - where my textile designs began. This is a pictorial reflection of the first Dizzy Bluebell Design on Harris Tweed.
I spend a lot of time on this beach not far from home. We were practically brought up here as a family and have a deep connection to it. So many memories remembered and still being made. My boys had their feet in the sand and fingers in the rockpools the same way I did. Magical.
I knew when i took this pic it would end up in a design. The romantic, pastel blues and pinks here were the inspiration that I drew on for the colour palette for the very first Kilted Tweetuu.
It is with great pride and appreciation that I work with Harris Tweed. The stunning, sustainable, heirloom canvas of all my designs. I have long had connections, through family and friends to the Western Isles and the intense love of that land, and it's people go hand in hand. This Tweed has such a beautiful feel of immense quality in hand, when working with it you can almost feel the heritage and love invested in its making.
